Ova jedinstvena izložba fotografija nastala je posebno za potrebe Državnog tajništva Sjedinjenih Država, te obilazi svijet već pet godina. Više od šezdeset fotografija posvećeno je autohtonim narodima Sjedinjenih Američkih Država, njihovoj povijesti i kulturi. Fotografije su nastale u razdoblju od 1898. do 1926. godine, a prikazuju veliku i izuzetnu raznolikost sjevernoameričkih plemena. Ova izložba je također posebno priznanje velikom fotografu i etnografu Edwardu S. Curtisu. Edward Curtis rođen je 1868. u ruralnom Wisconsinu u sjevernom središnjem dijelu SAD-a. Fotografijom se počeo baviti u dobi od dvanaest godina te je vrlo brzo postao ozbiljan i predan fotograf. 1906. godine, Curtis je započeo poduhvat koji će ga zaokupiti sljedeće dvadeset i četiri godine. Taj je projekt bio stvaranje njegovog magnum opusa: Sjevernoamerički Indijanac, dvadeset svezaka, dvadeset kompleta portfelja s ručno izrađenim knjigama. Svaki komplet sadrži više od 2.200 originalnih fotografija uz iscrpan tekst. Sva djela obuhvaćena ovom izložbom posuđena su iz osobne zbirke Christophera Cardoze, vodećeg svjetskog stručnjaka za život i rad Edwarda Curtisa. This is a unique photographic exhibition created expressly for the United States Department of State. It has been touring the world for five years already. More than 60 prints celebrate our Native peoples and their history and culture. Photographs were taken from 1898 to 1926 and show the broad and extraordinary diversity among the North American tribes and pay homage to the famed photographer/ethnographer Edward S. Curtis. Edward Curtis was born in 1868 in rural Wisconsin in the North Central United States. Curtis built his first camera at age twelve and very soon had become a serious and dedicated practitioner. In 1906 Edward Curtis began work on a project that would consume the next twenty-four years of his life. The project was the creation of his magnum opus: The North American Indian, a twenty-volume, twenty-portfolio set of books with more than 2,200 original, hand-pulled photogravure prints, all printed on handmade, imported etching stock. All work included in these exhibitions will be drawn from the archive of the personal collection of Christopher Cardozo, the world’s leading authority on Edward Curtis and his photography.
